Exploring Symmetry in Regular Polygons

Investigate how the lines of symmetry and order of rotational symmetry of a regular polygon relate to its number of sides.

Aufgabe 1

Putting It All Together

Answer these open ended questions on your own or with others to form deeper math connections.

Aufgabe 2

Create a hexagon.  Record the number of lines of symmetry you find.   What is the order of rotational symmetry? Repeat the process with a triangle.  Observe your results. Can you predict the number of lines of symmetry and the order of rotational symmetry that a 15-gon would have?  What about a 100-gon?

Aufgabe 3

Polly says that a 150-gon looks almost like a circle, so a circle should have 150 lines of symmetry, an order of rotational symmetry of 150.  Do you agree?  Why or why not?
