ws_1_function_shift

In this worksheet, we are going to investigate the changes when the function undergoes 1) horizontal shift and 2) vertical shift. Open the GeoGebra file – ws_1_function_sheet. We have restricted our exploration to cubic and parabola functions. Ensure that the ‘sliders’ p and q are aligned to zero (0). Choose Parabola or Cubic. The graph is sketched by the software for you. You may move the slider ‘p’ using arrow keys or mouse to the right or left. For the function f(x), when you ‘p’ the function f shifts horizontally by ‘p’ units, that is, f(x) becomes f(x+p). Here the function undergoes a horizontal shift alone and the new graph is sketched by the system. When p = 1, f(x) →f(x+1) When you move the slider ‘q’, it undergoes a vertical shift. So the function f(x) becomes f(x)+q. If q= -2, f(x) →f(x)-2. It is recommended that you explore what is variant and remains invariant. You may move ‘P’ and ‘q’ and verify your conclusions or generalisations.
