Teams use their probability intuition to predict the outcome of simple random experiments that use dice, balls, cards, and coins, placing StatCoin bets on their predictions to stay in play and take the lead. The competition offers separate categories for high school students and college students — no advanced math or stats required.
These activities are organized following the Intuition, Simulation, Calculation path. Kids should share what their "gut" tells them, and then do a couple of digital experiments to get a feel for what is happening. They should revise or reconsider their intuition before moving on to a Simulation. The simulation with either confirm or contradict the student's intuition. By now, the students should be able to follow a calculation of the probability, or at least desccribe what they would like to compute if they had some help.
