Shortest distance

Iran was trying to ship arms secretly in order to circumvent UN restrictions. Fearful of these new Russian arms. The U.A.E wanted to launch a drone plane and inspect the ship as it passed through the strait of Hormuz. The ship was passing along the line DC.

Question 1

What is the shortest distance the drone would have to fly to intercept the ship if they had to launch the drones from point E and every grid line is 12 miles?

Question 2

If the planes range is 140 miles on 20 gallons of fuel. a. Will it have enough range to get back to its origin? b. If not how much more fuel will it need at the minimum?
