Geometry 2-4: Transformations in the Plane

Learning Objectives

1) Identify the types of transformations. 2) Calculate the coordinates of the vertices of an image after a transformation.

Vocab Review

Transformation: A rule that changes a figure's position. Translation: Move's every point by a vector (Slide). Reflection: Reflects every point over a line (Flip). Rotation: Rotates ever point by a certain degree around a point of rotation (Turn). Figure: The object (point, line, polygon, etc.) you are transforming. Pre-Image: The original figure. Image: The transformed figure.

Complete 2 transformations

Complete 3 problems describing transformations

Apply the transformation in the question below.

Next, try using creating a translation that shifts the figure down 4 and right 2. What are the coordinates of your new points? Use W' X' Y' and Z' to label your new points.

Challenge!

Now, try creating a reflection over the line y=x. What are the coordinates of the image's vertices? Use S' R' and T' to label your coordinates.

Create Your Own Transformation

Create a transformation. It must be a shape with at least three vertices. Below, put the type of transformation, the preimage (A, B, C) and the image (A',B',C').
