Torricelli's Trumpet

Author:
kputnam
An applet to help students visualize the surface revolution of the function y = 1/x about the x-axis for 1< x. Creating a shape resembling a trumpet that has a finite volume, but infinite surface area.
1.What happens when you rotate a hyperbola, like this one y=1/x, around an asymptote like the x axis? Move slider to rotate f(x)=1/x around the x axis, rotate the object to investigate the shape created. 2. How can you find the volume of this shape? 3. How can you find the surface area of this shape
