3 Squares Problem

Creation of this applet was inspired by the Rays Through the Squares problem after Martin Gardner. 1) Can you prove, using only elementary geometry (and no trigonometry), that the pink angle measure equals the sum of the measures of the green and orange angles? 2) Can you create some new trigonometric (or even better--"inverse trigonometric") identities based upon your observations?
