Introduction to Reflection

Prior Knowledge

What do you think of what you hear the word 'Reflection'?

Estimate the reflection of figures by reflecting one point at a time. Refine the estimate using a grid.

Putting It All Together

Answer these open ended questions with your group.

When reflecting a shape across a line, what aspects of that shape’s sides or angles change? What parts stay the same?

The segments that connect the corresponding points of a preimage and image (the dotted lines that appear), always seems to intersect the line of reflection.  Describe the special type of intersection that occurs.

Observe the distance from a given point to the line of reflection.  Then, observe the distance from the corresponding reflected point to the line of reflection.  What do you notice about these distances?

Did seeing a grid make a difference in finding the reflected image? Explain why or why not.
