How to Construct a Perpendicular to a Line through a Point not on the Line
  1. Select a point on the line that is not the closest point to the point off the line (this could be the closest endpoint or a point you add to the line).
  2. Use the Compass to make a circle with the point you selected on the circle and the Point not on the line as its center.
  3. Mark the other point of intersection between the circle and the line.
  4. Construct the Perpendicular Bisector of the segment that you created with the two intersection points of the circle.
