Albers kegelprojectie

In the conical projection of Heinrich Christian Albers from 1805 the distances along the meridians are rescaled to get a area-true map. In the applet above you can compare the projection of Albert with the equidistant conical projection. In this projection true-distance parallel circles were chosen at 20° and 50° NL. Close to and between these two circles the distortion is minimal. More north the circles of latitude run closer to each other. Closer to the North Pole the meridians approach each other faster on a globe than in the conical projection. This is compensated with just a slight correction to get an area-true map. On the edge of the cone, even south of the equator, the meridians keep on running further apart, while on the globe they are approaching each other. In the Albers projection this is compensated by drawing ever going smaller distances between the circles of latitude. By doing this way the areas stay constant but the distortions become bigger.
