starting from a 2D plan

  • First we design a 2D plan for a muqarnas.
  • Then we fill in this plan with the tiles of the units.

In the Graphics we realise the plan with the muqarnas tiles.
  • Note that we can use the point tools to create the vertices of the tiles.
  • See that the arrows on the tiles fit with the muqarnas construction.
Now we can use the vertices of the tiles as supporting points for the units in the 3D View to build up the muqarnas. Use the navigation bar to follow stepwise the realisation of the tiles and the units of the muqarnas. Note that in while building up the 3D units sometimes we have to create additional points too. That's why in the applet to work in yourself there's an input bar. As the height of the full units is exactly 2, you can use a vertex of a tile (e.g. E_1) to create the appropriate starting point typing te command E_1 + (0, 0, 2). Once you get used to the way the custom tools work you can experiment in the previous activity of the book or even download the applet in it to make your own version of it. For muqarnas with additional shapes in the plan you can easily use the standard tools to draw them yourself additionally.
