damped oscillation demo
- Tim Brown
Carla has a weight hanging on a spring under a support beam. At rest, the weight hangs 4 inches down. She pulls it to 6 inches below the beam, and releases, after which it follows an oscillating harmonic motion pattern. It reaches its equilibrium point after 1.5 seconds, 4.5 seconds, 7.5 seconds, etc. It loses a certain % of it’s range of motion every second. Use the slider to find the effect of different % energy loss per second.
Notice that the "a" value is actually the % remaining - e.g. a 5% loss per second yields an "a" value of 95% or 0.95.
