4. Reflections

Constructing a Reflection

Use the written directions or the silent film to help you make your own construction.

Directions

1. Click on the Polygon tool to create any Polygon. Hint: To close the Polygon, connect it to your first point. 2. Make a line anywhere using the line tool. Hint: You need two points to make a line. 3. To perform a reflection:
  • Click on the "Reflect about Line" tool
  • Click on the shaded region of your polygon
  • Select your line.
You should see a new copy of your polygon that has points A', B', C', & D'. 4. Use the segment tool to connect the points on our pre-image to the corresponding points on our image. Hint: Connect A to A', B to B',... etc. 5. Use the point tool to mark the places where our line of reflection & our segments meet. Hint: Your points of intersection will be gray. 6. Use the Distance or Length tool to find the distance between the points on our pre-image to our corresponding point of intersection. Then find the distance between the points on our image to our corresponding point of intersection. Hint: You should notice something interesting about the lengths of the segments formed by the pre-image & point of intersection and the segments formed by the image & point of intersection.
