Subtraction of Integers (Integer Chips)
1. Represent the Minuend Using Sliders
- First, determine whether the minuend (the number being subtracted from) is positive or negative.
- Based on your choice, a corresponding slider will appear
- Use the slider to show the correct number of positive or negative chips representing the minuend.
- Before removing chips, decide if you need to add zero pairs (a positive and a negative chip) to help you subtract the subtrahend.
- If needed, type the number of zero pairs in the input box. These zero pairs do not change the value but make subtraction possible when the required chips are not present.
- To subtract the subtrahend, remove the correct number and type of chips (positive or negative).
- For example, to subtract -2, you need to remove two negative chips. If there aren’t enough, add zero pairs first.
- After removing the chips, type the difference in the input box.
- If your answer is correct, a ✅ check mark will appear.
- If your answer is incorrect, the applet will show "Try Again."
