Subtraction of Integers (Integer Chips)

1. Represent the Minuend Using Sliders
  • First, determine whether the minuend (the number being subtracted from) is positive or negative.
  • Based on your choice, a corresponding slider will appear
  • Use the slider to show the correct number of positive or negative chips representing the minuend.
2. Add Zero Pairs if Needed
  • Before removing chips, decide if you need to add zero pairs (a positive and a negative chip) to help you subtract the subtrahend.
  • If needed, type the number of zero pairs in the input box. These zero pairs do not change the value but make subtraction possible when the required chips are not present.
3. Remove Chips to Represent the Subtrahend
  • To subtract the subtrahend, remove the correct number and type of chips (positive or negative).
  • For example, to subtract -2, you need to remove two negative chips. If there aren’t enough, add zero pairs first.
4. Enter the Difference
  • After removing the chips, type the difference in the input box.
  • If your answer is correct, a ✅ check mark will appear.
  • If your answer is incorrect, the applet will show "Try Again."
