Ratios

Lesson Objective

Students will be able to write, compare, and find equivalent ratios.

Student-Facing Learning Target:

I can use ratios to represent relationships and use equivalent ratios to solve problems.

Vocabulary:

1.) Ratio: a comparison of two numbers 2.) Equivalent Ratios: two or more ratios that are equal

Do Now:

Evaluate the following: 1.) -4(-3) =

2.) -4 + (-3) =

3.) =

4.) Simplify the fraction. 3 6

Part One; Writing Ratios

When writing Ratios, we think about how much for everyone what. For example, for every 3 cups of fruit punch, there is 1 cup of Sprite. We would write this ratio as Fruit Punch to Sprite as 3 : 1 or 3 to 1 or 3/1 When we are asked to find an equivalent ratio, we need to see what was done to the one piece and then do it to the other. Example: 4:6 -> x : 24 6 x ? = 24 ?=4 4 x 4 = 16 New Ratio: 16:24

Example 1:

Josie took a long multiple-choice, end-of-year vocabulary test. The ratio of the number of problems Jose got incorrect to the number of problems she got correct is 2:9.

a.) If Jose missed 8 questions, how many did she get correct?

b.) If Jose missed 20 questions, how many did she get correct?

Example 2:

Pam and her brother both open savings accounts. Each begins with a balance of zero dollars. For every two dollars that Pam saves in her account, her brother saves five dollars in his account.

a.) Determine a ratio to describe the money in Pam's account to the money in her brother's account.

b.) If Pam has 40 dollars in her account, how much money does her brother have in his account?

Example 3:

Example 4:

Practice Problems:

1.) For every 8 hot dogs sold at the malt shop there are 3 hamburgers sold. What is the ratio of hot dogs sold to hamburgers sold?

2.) For every 5 PS3 games Robin owned, she had 8 Wii games. What is her ratio of Wii games to PS3 games?

3.) At the store for every 6 movies sold, there were 8 books sold. What is the ratio of books sold to movies sold?

4.) In a neighborhood for every 2 old homes there were 8 new homes. What is the ratio of old homes to new homes?

5.) At the thrift store, for every 3 long sleeve shirts, there were 2 short sleeve shirts. What is the ratio of long sleeve shirts to short sleeve shirts?
