The ellipse is one of the possible ways to cut cone. Apollonius of Perga ca. 200 vC was the first to study cones as geometric objects.
Other conics are the parabole and the hyperbole. The circle can be regarded as a special case of an ellipse. In the applet below you can experiment with cones.
