the Parthenon in pictures

The picture below illustrates how nonchalantly one can draw lines upon a picture to illustrate the golden section. It's not clear where the different lines of the largest golden rectangle are drawn and the remaining lines even don't match with anything.

If you take the effort to compare different pictures it's clear that this golden rectangle is interpreted differently.
  • In a first picture the lower side of the rectangle is below the stairs and the vertical sides at the edge of the fronton. The exact position is difficult to define due to the very thick lines.
  • In a second picture the lower side of the rectangle is above the stairs.
  • In a third picture the lower side of the rectangle is somewhere half the stairs and the vertical sides at the edge of the columns.
So, this won't get us far. The real dimensions are definitely a better source. You can read more about it in the next activity.
