Session 9

Actividad 1: ¡Qué hambre!

Comenzamos comentando las soluciones al problema de la sesión anterior. ¿Qué recetas habéis preparado?

The fraction of a number

Many times, as in the previous activities, we need to divide a quantity by a number, and then multiply the result by a different number. For this, we use the fraction of a number. Example: of 50 is the result of dividing 50 by 8, and then multiplying the result by 3. of 50 = This is the same as multiplying by 3, and then dividing by 8: of 50 = Check the result in the next applet!

Activity 2:

1) You have filled of a bottle of 50 ml. How much water do you have? 2) You have filled of a bottle of 200 ml. How much water do you have? 3) You have filled of a bottle of 150 ml. How much water do you have? 4) You have bottles of 200 ml. How much water do you have? Bonus: Find all possible ways to solve part 4). Can you express that number in a different way? Tip: Use the previous applet to check your solutions! Do they make sense?

Activity 3:

Let's turn this around! 1) You put 50 ml of water in a bottle of 200 ml. What part of the bottle is filled? 2) You put 100 ml of water in a bottle of 300 ml. What part of the bottle is filled? 3) You put 20 ml of water in a bottle of 50 ml. What part of the bottle is filled? Simplify your fractions!

Activity 4:

1) You put 50 ml of water inside a bottle, and notice that 2/5 are filled. What is the size of the bottle? 2) You put 20 ml of water inside a bottle, and notice that 3/5 are filled. What is the size of the bottle? Is it bigger than the previous one? Does it make sense? 3) You have 500 ml of water, but one bottle is not enough! You need some other bottles! When you finish, you notice that you have filled 3 and a half bottles. What is the size of one bottle?
