Division as Equal Sharing and Grouping

Objectives

Students will understand division as the process of splitting a number into equal groups. Students will apply division to real-world problems using GeoGebra.

Standards:

NJSLS-2.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step problems involving equal group situations, arrays, and number lines.NJSLS-2.OA.C.3: Determine whether a group of objects has an even or odd number of elements and can be divided into equal groups.

Introduction:

Imagine you have 12 pencils and 4 friends. How can you share the pencils so that everyone gets the same amount? Demonstrate this by physically dividing 12 pencils into 4 equal groups, encouraging students to observe the process. Through discussion, students will recognize that division is about making equal groups.Using visual aids like counters, drawings, and arrays, I will model several division problems to build conceptual understanding before transitioning into hands-on activities.
