Blog 2
Describe a blog.
Frequently updated
web sites with dated posts posted in reverse chronological order are what are
often referred to as blogs (Bortree 2005; Herring, Scheidt et al. 2005;
Buckingham and Willett 2006; Kelleher and Miller 2006; Schmidt 2007).
Additionally, blogs combine the functions of a website, a diary, and an online
forum (Embrey 2002). They are typically online personal journals that are
regularly updated with connections to
related and complimentary subjects, frequently from other bloggers. The
"blogosphere" refers to this network of blogs.
The contraction of the word "blog" from "web
log" stems from an early definition of the medium as a log or diary that
is published online. John Barger, editor of the Robot Wisdom blog, first used
the phrase "web log" in 1997. (Blood 2000). Peter Merholz coined the
term "blog" for the first time in 1999. (Merholz 2002). As an alternative
to the personal home-page (or web-page), which was a common form of
internet-based self expression at the time, blogging first took shape in the
late 1990s as a way for people to publish basic, online diaries.
Since then, it has developed into a "killer app"
with the ability to encourage discussion, information exchange, and teamwork
(Hiler 2002, 4). Blogs have evolved more due to practicality than aesthetics.
Thus, blogs are similar to other kinds of human communication in that they are
spontaneous, organic, and opportunistic (Williams and Jacobs 2004).
