Drawing algebraic curves with LEGO-linkages

In this diploma thesis building LEGO-linkages, as little children do, and teaching mathematics are united. In our childhood most of us played with LEGO. For children it makes a lot of fun to connect the pieces and build different objects like a house, a vehicle or something else. This motivation could either be used at school with some changes to increase the motivation for the mathematics classes. Of course, it would be easy to build a linkage out of LEGO-pieces, draw the curve and be happy to obtain the expected curve or more precise to think, that the estimated curve was drawn. But this is not what mathematics does. Mathematicians want to understand the theory behind the linkages, they want to explain the outcome and not say “it could be a straight line” or “it seems to be a circle”. In this diploma thesis having fun with constructing LEGO-linkages and the mathematical background are combined, further some practical experiences are summed up in the last chapter.
