Jenna's Birthday Cake

This resource focuses on learning how to take a single unit and gradually cover the area of it by overlapping the area with the needed amount of units. By using the cake as a visualization for a plane figure, you will learn how to cover it with individual pieces. You will learn to count the squares that make up the full cake and know that the unit squares is said to have an area of n square units. Amanda is throwing her friend Jenna a birthday party. Amanda wants to bake a cake for Jenna. Amanda can't figure out how many pieces to cut out of the cake. In order for the guests to each have an equal piece you must help Amanda to find the area of cake by counting how many individual pieces fit inside the full cake. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.5.B A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.
Questions and directions for you: 1.) Place the square pieces of sliced cake over the full cake and count how many pieces are needed to cut equal parts of the cake. 2.) Change the size (smaller or larger) of the cake and repeat to find how many pieces are needed to cut the cake into equal parts. 3.) If the cake gets bigger will there need to be more or less pieces? 4.) Look how long the cake is and compare it to the side lengths and how many pieces of cake you can see. 5.) Look at the width and length of the cake. How does it compare to the number of pieces?
