12. Introducing Transformations

A transformation is a way of moving or changing a figure. There are three types of basic transformations that preserve the size and shape of the figure. These three, reflections, rotations, and translations, are called isometries. Isometries flip, turn, or slide a figure but never bend or distort it. In this activity, you'll experiment with basic isometries by transforming a flag-shaped polygon. (You'll use this shape because it's easy to keep track of where it's pointing.)

Translations

  1. In order to translate a shape, you need to indicate a direction and a distance. Segment AB has been created for you, which will serve as the translation vector.
  2. Select, in order, the Translate by a Vector button, the Original polygon region, point A, then point B.
  3. Change the color of the translated image to green.
  4. Use the text tool to label the translated polygon Translated Image.
  5. Drag point B to change your vector, and observe the relationship between the translated image and the original figure.
How are the original figure and translated image different, and how are they the same?
  • Rotations
