POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS

he number line is a straight line where every point corresponds to a number. It's a fantastic tool to visualize numbers and their relationships!
  • Zero (0): This is the center of the number line. It's neither positive nor negative. Think of it as your starting point!
  • Positive Numbers: These are numbers greater than zero. They are located to the right of zero on the number line (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4...). The further right you go, the larger the number.
  • Negative Numbers: These are numbers less than zero. They are located to the left of zero on the number line (e.g., -1, -2, -3, -4...). The further left you go, the smaller the number.
The number line helps us see that -5 is smaller than -2 because -5 is further to the left. It also helps us understand operations like adding and subtracting by moving right or left along the line!

  1. Placement Challenge:
    • "Place a point on the number line at 5. Now, place a point at -5. What do you notice about their distance from zero? What about their direction?"

  2. Comparing Numbers:
    • "Is -7 greater than or less than -3? How can the number line help you decide?" (Hint: Think about which number is further to the right).
