Polynomial Function Part II

1) End Behavior of Polynomials

In the following applet, investigate the degree and leading coefficient of each polynomial and compare it to the graphs end behavior.

Were your initial predictions about the end behavior of even- and odd-degree polynomials confirmed by the applet above? Explain how.

2) Zeros of a Polynomial Function

Use the slides to investigate the behavior of a zero based on the degree of the factor.

  • Did the graph always pass through the exact number of zeros you expected? If not, what could be the reason?
  • How did the multiplicity of zeros (e.g., repeated factors) affect the way the graph touched or crossed the x-axis?
  • Compare two polynomials: one even-degree and one odd-degree, both with the same number of zeros. What differences do you notice in their overall shape?
