Definition of Derivatives and Gradient Functions

Derivatives and Gradients

A derivative is the outcome of a function after differentiating it. Deriving a function provides you with the ability to find the gradient of the curve at a specified point on the function. The gradient of a function, also known as the slope, describes the rate of change of a function in a particular direction. You can use various methods to derive a function, all of which will be covered in later chapters.
