Section 4b: Centroid

Directions for Using the Applet:

1. Remember: A median connects a vertex of a triangle to the midpoint of the opposite side. 2. In this applet, you will see three medians and a special orange point called the centroid. 3. Move the BIG WHITE VERTICES of the triangle to try different shapes.
  • Do this before re-sliding the slider.
4. Observe the distances along the medians and how they divide. 5. Take a few minutes to experiment and pay attention to any patterns you notice. 6. If you’re stuck or unsure, scroll to the bottom to watch the “Quick (Silent) Demo.”

Questions to Answer (Write in Complete Sentences):

1. What word describes the point where the three medians intersect? How do they intersect?

2. If a purple median measures 18 inches, what are the lengths of the two segments it creates?

3. If a blue median measures 12 inches, what are the lengths of the two segments it creates?

4. Find the exact value of each ratio: a) AG / AE b) CG / CD c) BG / BF

5. What pattern do you notice in your answers to question 4?

6. If only one median is drawn, how can you locate the centroid without constructing the other two?
