Mean Absolute Deviation - Differences
- Kathy Shafer
1. Move points A, B, C and D. What do you notice about segments a, b, c and d? 2. Is it possible to drag one point without affecting the mean? Why or why not? 3. Estimate the sum of the lengths of the segments to the left of the mean. Then, estimate the sum of the lengths of the segments to the right of the mean. What do you notice? Compare your answers with a classmate who has points in different locations. Can you make a conjecture about the sum of the segments on each side of the mean? 4. Find the average of the sum of all the segments. Click on Show MAD to check your answer. 5. Summarize what you learned in this task. *Note that because the points cannot be stacked, this is not a dot plot.
