MOVEABLE BRIDGES [G-CO.2-8] Tasks adapted from Burger, E. B., Chard, D. J., Kennedy, P. A., Leinwand, S. J., Freddie, R. L., Roby, T. W., …Waits, B. K. (2012). Geometry, (p. 671). Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. You have been tasked with constructing a moveable bridge that allows for boats and ships to pass through. Assumptions: ➢ Bridge span opening must be 60 feet in length ➢ Boats/Ships are assumed to have a maximum width of 25 feet ➢ Neglect road thickness Using the animations and figure given, choose one type of bridge (lift, draw, or folding) and design it to accommodate the given boat requirements. In your summary, please include: • A drawing/design layout of the bridge type with all appropriate dimensions and important features labeled • A description of the transformations that take place using a specific point of reference, relevant angles measures and lengths. • Calculations showing the minimum amount of work (i.e. angle of rotation) needed for the bridge to accommodate the boat and the height of the bridge at that point. • What other factors need to be taken into consideration to make your bridge the most useful to boats passing through it? Does the height of the boat need to be considered? Of the three choices, which do you feel is the best design and why?
