Recognizing Squares

Worksheet Objective For this dynamic worksheet, students will be using the attributes given on the shapes below to identify if they are squares or not. They will be asked to drag around points of the shape and then identify which shapes are squares or not. This fulfills the standard CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.1 because they are asked to recognize the shapes by the defining attributes. The standard addresses triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes but for this worksheet the focus is only on identifying squares by their defining attributes such as angles and side lengths. By doing a dynamic worksheet on geogebra the manipulation of shapes can be done for students to have a better understanding of how to identify squares based on their attributes. If you were to just use regular materials, students wouldn't be able to manipulate the objects in order to see the different attributes changing. Sometimes with cutouts or typical classroom manipulatives students can get confused due to the shapes looking similar. However, by using geogebra the attributes are given and change with a simple click and drag of the corner points.

Activity

1. How many squares are pictured? 2. Click and drag a corner point on all 3 objects. Now how many squares do you have? 3. Is the orange object a square? Why or why not? 4. Is the pink object a square? Why or Why not? 5. Is the green object a square? Why or Why not? 6. Which object is not a square based on its angles? 7. Which object is not a square based on its side lengths? Bonus: Play around with resizing each shape. Can you resize these objects to make them all into squares? CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
