Calculating Polar Area
This shows how polar area is calculated by using a Riemann sum of sector areas. You can enter a function, change the bounds, and enter the number of sectors used for your approximation. The actual area is also calculated for comparison.
1. Try several shapes - for example, a circle along an axis (r = a sin(t) or r = a cos(t)) or a rose (r = a sin(bt) or r = a cos(bt)). 2. What happens if you use a circle centered at the origin (r = constant)? 3. What kind of Riemann sum (lefthand or righthand) is being drawn?
