GeoGebra User Interface Translation

Thank you for your interest in translating GeoGebra to your language! In order to translate the user interface of GeoGebra, you need Java 1.4.2 or later (www.java.com). You may only start any translations if you agree to GeoGebra's license terms (see http://www.geogebra.org/download/license.txt).

Attesoro Editor

Download the file attesoro.jar from http://www.geogebra.org/source/translation/gui/. This file is the editor Attesoro that you will use to do the translation of GeoGebra's user interface. Double click "attesoro.jar" in order to start the editor (you need Java 1.4.2 or later installed, see www.java.com).

Download properties zip file

Download the latest version of the properties files from http://www.geogebra.org/source/translation/gui/ This file includes all properties files in all languages currently supported by GeoGebra: geogebra_prop_XX.zip (XX is the version number). Unzip the downloaded geogebra_prop_XX.zip to your computer. You are going to translate the following files:

  • command.properties
  • error.properties
  • menu.properties
  • plain.properties

The translation process

  • Start the editor "Attesoro" that you downloaded
  • From the "File" menu choose "Open" and open the file menu.properties from the directory where you unpacked all the properties files.
  • In the upper-left window of Attesoro you see all available translations of this properties file.

Adding a new language

If there is no previous translation of the help files in your language, you should now create a new "Locale". From the "Edit" menu choose "Locale" and "New..." and select your language in the dialog. Usually you should leave the country as "All". Please remember your language code (i.e. "af" for Afrikaans).

Doing the translation

  • Select your language in the upper-left window of Attesoro.
  • Click on the first "Key" in the lower-left window of Attesoro.
  • In the upper-right window of Attesoro you can now start to do your translation of the "Default Text", i.e. the English text.
  • Continue with the translation of the next key using "Ctrl + N"
  • Please translate all four properties files in this way: command.properties, error.properties, menu.properties, plain.properties

Note for the commands.properties file

Command names must not include any spaces, i.e. a command name has to be one single word.

Note for the plain.properties file

With GeoGebra 3.1 we have introduced a more sophisticated way to describe objects. For example, the key "HyperbolaWithFociABPassingThroughC" has English translation "Hyperbola with foci %0, %1 passing through %2". The symbols %0 %1 and %2 should remain in your translation but you can put them in the correct position for your language and they will be replaced with the names of objects by GeoGebra.

For example "Hyperbola with foci %0, %1 passing through %2" would become "Hyperbola with foci A,F passing through Q". In German it would be "Hyperbel mit Brennpunkten %0, %1 durch %2" which would become "Hyperbel mit Brennpunkten A, F durch Q"

Updating an existing translation

  • Download the latest version of the properties files from http://www.geogebra.org/source/translation/gui. This file should have a name like geogebra_prop_XX.zip (XX is the version number).
  • Read the change notes for this version to learn about recent changes in the properties files:
  • In Attesoro you can easily see all untranslated keys in the lower-left window: they are printed in BLUE color.

Send us your translation

When you have finished your translation, pack your files into one zip file. For example, if you did a translation to Afrikaans (language code "af") your zip file should contain these files: command_af.properties, error_af.properties, menu_af.properties, plain_af.properties.

Please send your zip file to Judith judith@geogebra.org via e-mail.

Thank you for your support of the GeoGebra project!
