Add your ideas for possible workshops for the Pedagogy Conference on December 2 here. We will have 4 workshops that will be held twice each.

  • I feel the teachers would benefit from the use of sliders and commands. We could split the 2 workshops we created in class into 4 sections to develop 4 workshops.

1. How to reinforce algebraic and geometric constructs by example using GeoGebra. This includes basic equations- linear, absolute, rational, and quadratic with GeoGebra- includes using sliders for coefficients and seeing the different forms (example: slope intercepts versus standard for linear) to provide different views as sponsored by NCTM standards.

2. Using GeoGebra to explain and reinforce Geometry postulates, theorems, and corollaries – my interests are with triangle congruencies and triangle properties of Circumcenter, Incenter, Centroid, Orthocenter, and Exterior Angle theorems so Geometry students will intuitively understand and comprehend versus rote memorization of these postulates, theorems, and corollaries.

3. Strategies to supplement and explain Algebra and Geometry using GeoGebra- using kinesthetic, visual, and audible examples to reach all of the learning styles of middle school math students. This would include explaining slope, or the vertex of an absolute or quadratic equation.

4. Using conditional statements to provide alternate examples and views of Algebra and Geometry concepts and examples. For example showing students that AAA does not provide congruence, using conditional statement to scale equilateral triangles to readily explain this concept.

I think a great idea for a workshop is to teach a lesson to them on how this program can be used in original ways, picking topics like statistics and solving equations. I believe showing the obvious ways to use the system line graphing and geometry is nice but, but now that we know the system better we can show the less obvious uses. We should pick topics that most people would look at and say this system would not help me here and find a way to make it helpfull. Then we can show them in this workshop. Since the people were using the system this summer we can glance through the reveiw a bit faster than new users and show them original and unusual uses for the program.
